Shopping around for the right pet insurance plan is always a good idea but the biggest mistake most people in your position make is not to carefully explore a plan before making the purchasing decision. Most buyers simply choose the lowest premiums but there’s more to picking a policy than that. In fact, if you don’t shop around enough you could end up paying more in the long run.
One thing you need to look at is the exclusions of the policy. Some pet insurance plans will not pay for injuries or health problems connected to a genetic or hereditary condition. For example, if your dog has a genetic predisposition for hip dysplasia then you want to look for a policy that does not exclude these types of problems. You’ll pay more for the coverage because the insurance company is taking on more risk but the additional cost will be worth it.
Another common exclusion is a pre-existing condition. If you have a diabetic dog, for instance, the policy may not cover the treatment for this condition. This type of exclusion can sometimes only last for a set amount of time or can be for the life of the policy. Make sure to read the fine print.
Most policies will not cover the costs associated with breeding your dog. However, if your pregnant dog does have a medical emergency then the condition may still be covered. You can always have the treatment pre-qualified if necessary.
