beware of the dogFor many pet owners, purchasing pet liability insurance is just the smart thing to do. Pet liability insurance covers situations in which the pet owner may have a liability due to an action of the pet. This insurance is a way to protect third parties from loss due to something that your pet may do. Some of the most common reasons for liability issues with pets include, bites, and destruction of property.

If your pet should injure someone you will likely be held responsible for the costs incurred by the third party; this could lead to a lawsuit. If you don’t have pet liability insurance the financial losses could be devastating. In addition to injury, your pet may destroy a neighbor’s property. This can be a problem, especially with dogs, and if you don’t have insurance you will have to pay for that property out of your own pocket.

For these reasons alone, it is a good idea to obtain pet liability insurance to ensure that you and your family are protected from financial losses. Sure, we all like to believe that our pets are great animals and would never do anything bad, but the sad fact is, when these unfortunate situations do occur, the pet owners often believed the same thing.

Pet liability insurance is particularly important if you own an exotic pet, or a dog. Although it isn’t a bad idea to get liability insurance on your dog no matter what breed it is, it is definitely recommended for certain breeds. Some of the most aggressive dog breeds include, Dobermans, Pit Bulls, Akitas, Great Danes, Chow Chows, as well as German Shepherds. These are just a few of the dog breeds where pet liability insurance is recommended, but there are many more; in fact, even the gentlest breeds have been known to bite, causing death or injury.

It is also important to get pet liability insurance if you own an exotic pet. These types of pets are notorious for being expensive to insure, and the reason for this is that they can be even more unpredictable than domesticated animals. For instance, if you own a monkey you have to consider the fact that monkeys are notorious for being prone to bite, not only this, but they can easily transmit disease to humans. Even if all you own is a lizard, you may find that you need pet liability insurance, as lizards can pass salmonella to humans.

No matter how much you love your pet and believe that it is harmless, the fact is that animals can be unpredictable, and this is why pet liability insurance is such a necessity. Although you may never need it, liability insurance is good to have, just incase.

Pet liability insurance will cover a third party in a situation where death or injury should occur due to your pet; additionally, it will also cover property damage, just in case your dog digs up the neighbor’s flower garden. Don’t get caught by surprise, protect yourself with pet liability insurance.
