Pet Medical Insurance

in Pet Insurance 101

Pet medical insurance is a new way to ensure that your pet gets the medical care they deserve, without sending you into debt. Just like healthcare insurance for people, pet medical insurance helps you to afford the best veterinarian care possible for your pet, and this included preventative care, which is extremely important to your pet’s health.

When you consider purchasing pet medical insurance you’ll want to look for an insurance company that offers the right policy to cover your pet’s needs. Not all pet medical insurance plans are created equal; some will cover more things than others, and almost no pet medical insurance will cover your pet’s every medical need; though most pet insurance companies do try and offer coverage that will keep your costs low.

When you purchase a pet medical insurance plan you may have several levels of protection you can choose from, from a basic insurance plan, to a premium plan. Many pet medical insurance plans will cover everything from acne, to poisonings, and even kidney transplants. It is not difficult to imagine how expensive a procedure such as a kidney transplant might be if your pet needed one, and without pet medical insurance there is always a chance that you may not be able to afford it at all.

In addition to hundreds of illnesses, surgeries and other medical conditions, you can also purchase pet medical insurance that will cover preventative care that includes vaccinations, heartworm prevention and flea control, as well as dental care.

Although there are many things that pet medical insurance does cover, some exceptions include hereditary disorders, preexisting medical conditions, diseases that could have been prevented with vaccines, cosmetic procedures, etc. Additional conditions that may not be covered by pet medical insurance include parasites, behavior problems, anterior cruciate ligament damage, if it occurs within a certain time period after coverage.

Before purchasing pet medical insurance for your pet, be sure that you have completely researched the policy and that it will cover your pet’s needs. You do not want to purchase pet insurance believing that it will cover vet expenses for your pet, only to find out later that it doesn’t.

Pet medical insurance works much the same as health insurance for people. You choose a pet insurance plan and pay a monthly premium according to your chosen insurance plan. You can also expect to pay a deductible and copay, which will vary, depending on the pet medical insurance plan you enroll in. Basically, the higher your monthly premiums, the lower your deductible and copay will be.

In most cases the vet will not bill your insurance company, you will have to pay for services at the time they are rendered, and submit a claim to your pet medical insurance company. If the vet visit is covered, you will be reimbursed for the cost within a short period of time, minus your copay and deductible.

If you want to avoid the high cost of surprise vet visits, and preventative care, pet medical insurance is the perfect solution.
